Ethyl 4-oxo-1,4-dihydro-3-quinolinecarboxylate is a quinolinecarboxylic acid anion that has a synthetic process. The compound was synthesized by hydrogenation reduction of the corresponding nitro compound. The reaction was carried out in the presence of potassium hydroxide and phosphorus oxychloride. The product was obtained as a white crystalline solid with significant cytotoxicity against L1210 cells. This compound also inhibits bacterial growth in vitro, and its mechanism of action is believed to be due to the inhibition of nucleophilic attack on the phosphonium ion. Ethyl 4-oxo-1,4-dihydro-3-quinolinecarboxylate inhibits the enzyme n-dimethyl formamide (DMF) reductase and may be used as an antibacterial agent in DMF solvent formulations.
