Eradicane is a fatty acid that inhibits bacterial growth. Eradicane has been shown to have inhibitory activity against a broad range of bacteria and fungi. The antimicrobial activity of Eradicane is due to its ability to bind to the lipid membrane of the cell wall, leading to leakage of cellular contents and eventual cell death. This compound also has an inhibitory effect on the synthesis of fatty acids and sterols in plants, which may be due to its ability to inhibit the enzyme fatty acid synthase. Eradicane reacts with light in vitro, but not under conditions present in vivo. This reaction is thought to occur through photoactivation of Eradicane by UV light, leading to free radical formation that can kill cells.
