Ethyl 2-mercaptopropionate is a reactive organic acid that is used as an initiator in the polymerization of methyl ethyl methacrylate. It also has been shown to function as an allosteric modulator, which means it affects the binding of other ligands to its protein target. It can be activated by acyltransferases and has been shown to have congestive heart effects. The hydroxyl group on the molecule makes it ionizable and fluorescence properties are evident when ethyl 2-mercaptopropionate is exposed to ultraviolet light. Optical properties, such as absorption and emission spectra, are also present.
