Ethion has been shown to have a low-level genotoxic effect on some cell lines. Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) knockout mice were used as a model system to study the effects of ethion on inflammatory responses in vivo. Ethion has also been found to be chemically stable and non-genotoxic when subjected to wastewater treatment processes.
