Ethyleneglycolmonooctylether (EGME) is a synthetic compound that has been used as an antiviral agent and as a model for the HIV-1 envelope glycoprotein. It is derived from ethylene oxide and octanol, which are unsaturated alkyl compounds. EGME can be used to inhibit the growth of bacteria, including resistant infections, by binding to serine protease in the bacterial cell wall. This binding prevents the formation of an enzyme-substrate complex required for protein synthesis and cell division. EGME also inhibits viral replication by binding to influenza viruses and other enveloped viruses. EGME has been shown to be effective against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and Clostridium perfringens, although is not active against acid-fast bacteria such as Mycobacterium tuberculosis or Mycobacterium avium complex.
