Ethyl 2,4,5-trifluorobenzoylacetate is an intermediate of difloxacin, which is a potent antibacterial agent. It is synthesized by the cyclization of orthoformate and trifluoroacetyl chloride with sodium ethoxide in ethanol. The reaction is optimized to give the desired product in high yield. The cleavage of this ester can be carried out using a variety of reagents such as hydrochloric acid or sodium hydroxide. Ethyl 2,4,5-trifluorobenzoylacetate has been used as an antibacterial agent for the treatment of urinary tract infections.
