5-Ethyl-5-methylhydantoin is a molecule that is used as a biocide and a photosensitizer. It is used in the treatment of radiation burns, to prevent infections, and as an antiseptic. The molecule has two chiral centers and can exist as either of two stereoisomers. 5-Ethyl-5-methylhydantoin has been shown to be more stable than other molecules in light. This substance is also useful as a photosensitizer because it absorbs x-rays and forms radicals that are toxic to cells.
