Description

4-Ethylbiphenyl is an organic compound that is used as a chemical intermediate. It can be synthesized by cross-coupling reactions from biphenyl, which is obtained from the pyrolysis of coal tar or petroleum, and terephthalic acid. 4-Ethylbiphenyl can also be generated by catalytic hydrogenation of phenol. The use of 4-ethylbiphenyl as a chemical intermediate has been increasing due to the high demand for silicone in the electronics industry. This chemical has been shown to bioconcentrate in aquatic organisms, leading to its classification as a persistent organic pollutant.
