Ethyl-N-benzylpiperid-3-one-4-carboxylate is a potent 5HT4 receptor agonist that has affinity for this receptor. It has been shown to increase the rate of gastrointestinal motility and also has acute ischemic activity. The molecule was optimized by synthesizing analogs with carbonyl groups at different positions on the piperidinone ring. This led to a molecule that had a high affinity for the 5HT4 receptor, an increased bioavailability, and improved pharmacokinetic properties. The sulfide bond in this molecule makes it scalable and sulfoxide bonds make it stable.
