Tanshinlactone is a chemical with the molecular formula C14H12O4. It is a diterpene compound that belongs to the group of natural compounds. Tanshinlactone inhibits protein synthesis in cells by binding to the 30S ribosomal subunit and inhibiting peptidyl transferase activity. Tanshinlactone has been shown to have anti-inflammatory, anti-tumor, and cardioprotective properties in animal studies. The biological properties of tanshinlactone may be due to its ability to inhibit cycloheximide, an inhibitor of protein synthesis. This chemical also inhibits the enzyme hydrolysis of coumarin derivatives, which are found in plants such as Rhizoma Gastrodiae and Carthamus Tinctorius, which are used in traditional Chinese medicine.
