Linopirdine is an experimental drug that inhibits the activity of voltage-gated potassium channels. It has been shown to inhibit whole-cell currents in rat phrenic nerve cells and to reduce locomotor activity in rats. Linopirdine also reduces the release of acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter associated with cholinergic transmission, by inhibiting the enzyme cholinesterase. Linopirdine has been shown to be effective in treating autoimmune diseases such as multiple sclerosis and rheumatoid arthritis as well as infectious diseases like HIV.
