Methyl 3-(4-methoxyphenyl)oxirane-2-carboxylate is a biochemical that has been used as a surfactant. It is also an important intermediate in the synthesis of diltiazem hydrochloride, a medication used to treat high blood pressure and angina. Methyl 3-(4-methoxyphenyl)oxirane-2-carboxylate can be produced by an asymmetric synthesis or by reductive amination of acetaldehyde with 4-methoxybenzaldehyde.
