4-Iodo-3-nitroaniline is a crystalline solid that belongs to the class of nitrobenzoic acids. It can be synthesized by reacting 4-iodoaniline with nitrous acid and has been shown to be an efficient method for making this compound. The molecular structure of this molecule has been elucidated using single crystal x-ray diffraction, which revealed that it has two possible orientations: one in which the chloride ion is coordinated to the nitrogen atom of the aromatic ring and one in which it is coordinated to the oxygen atom. 4-Iodo-3-nitroaniline has acidic properties and concomitantly forms salts with bases, such as alkali metal chlorides or sodium hydroxide.
