Fluorouracil is an antimetabolite that is used in the treatment of a variety of cancers, including colon cancer and breast cancer. Fluorouracil inhibits the enzyme thymidylate synthetase, which is essential for the production of DNA. Fluorouracil also inhibits ribonucleotide reductase and deoxycytidine kinase, resulting in a decrease in cellular proliferation. The drug may be used as an imaging agent, or as an antiviral agent to treat murine sarcoma virus infection. It has been shown to have some effectiveness against human osteosarcoma cells in vitro. Fluorouracil also has a role in the prevention and treatment of hyperproliferative diseases such as psoriasis and benign prostatic hyperplasia.
