Description

Fluvastatin is a cholesterol-lowering drug that belongs to the group of statins. It has a potential as an anti-infective agent, targeting matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9), which plays an important role in the pathogenesis of infectious diseases. Fluvastatin inhibits MMP-9 activity by binding to its enzyme active site and blocking the catalytic cleft. This leads to reduced inflammation and tissue degradation, thereby inhibiting bacterial growth and increasing the effectiveness of antibiotics. Fluvastatin has been shown to be useful in reducing experimental models of infection. Fluvastatin can also inhibit drug transporter P-glycoprotein, which may lead to potential drug interactions with other drugs that are transported by P-glycoprotein such as cyclosporine and tacrolimus.
