• Description: Fosfomycin is an antibiotic that is used to treat urinary tract infections caused by bacteria. It is a bactericidal antibiotic that works by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis and, therefore, bacterial growth. Fosfomycin has been shown to be effective against both susceptible and resistant strains of bacteria. Resistance to fosfomycin develops quickly among bacteria, so it should not be used as the sole agent in the treatment of an infection. Fosfomycin should not be taken with sodium citrate because this will decrease its effectiveness. Symptoms of fosfomycin use may include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or constipation.
