9-Fluorenecarboxylic acid is a colorless, viscous liquid with a strong, fruity odor. It is soluble in organic solvents such as chloroform and benzene. The compound can be synthesized by dehydroabietic acid and trifluoroacetic acid hydrolysis of 9-fluorenone. 9-Fluorenecarboxylic acid has been shown to have acute toxicities in mice that are comparable to those of acrylonitrile, but it is less toxic than acrylamide. The mechanism of 9-fluorenecarboxylic acid's toxicity is still unknown, although kinetic energy and polymer film formation have been proposed as possible mechanisms. This compound can also be used for the synthesis of polymers with hydrogen bonds and fluorescence detection properties.
