Fumaric acid monoethyl ester (FMEE) is a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) reagent that can be used as an alternative to p-hydroxybenzoic acid in the PCR process. FMEE has been shown to be a suitable substrate for the production of polymers with metal hydroxides, which are biocompatible and non-toxic. FMEE is often used as a model system for fumaric acid, monoethyl ester (FAE), and fumarate, which are all three important components of the cellular metabolic pathway.
