5-Fluoro-2-methylaniline is a colorless liquid that has been used as a probe to investigate the orientation of molecular orbitals and the interaction of axial ligands. 5-Fluoro-2-methylaniline reacts with guanine, forming an epoxide that can be reduced to methyl anthranilate. The reaction mechanism for this transformation includes a nucleophilic attack by the probe on the guanine. 5-Fluoro-2-methylaniline is also used in preparative organic chemistry to synthesize anisidine and other heterocycles.
5-Fluoro-2-methylaniline is an isomer of 2,5-difluorobenzene and it has been suggested that it could serve as a model for studying the effects of fluorination on aromatic rings.
