Description

2-Fluoro-5-(trifluoromethyl)benzoic acid is an electrophile that can be used in the synthesis of organic compounds. It is also a substrate for Grignard reactions and halogenation. This compound can be prepared by reacting 2,2-dichloro-1,1,1-trifluoroethane with magnesium in dry ether at a temperature of -78°C. The introduction of a halide to the benzene ring leads to the formation of a negatively charged intermediate that reacts with another molecule of magnesium chloride. This reaction is an exothermic process and proceeds spontaneously without heating. The product can then be purified by recrystallization from a solvent such as ethyl acetate or dichloromethane.
