(Formylmethyl)triphenylphosphonium chloride is an antimicrobial agent that has been shown to have antibacterial and antifungal activity. It is considered to be a chloride salt of formaldehyde and methylphenylphosphonic acid. It is used in the manufacture of amino acids, as well as being used as a preservative in food. (Formylmethyl)triphenylphosphonium chloride has been shown to inhibit the growth of bacteria such as Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus cereus, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. This drug also inhibits fungal growth, including Candida albicans and Aspergillus niger. The antimicrobial activity of the compound may be due to its ability to interfere with protein synthesis by binding to ribosomes or DNA-dependent RNA polymerase. Spectroscopy studies show that (formylmethyl)triphenylphosphon
