It is also used to synthesize analogs of the serine protease NS3, which are postulated to inhibit hepatitis C virus replication by preventing the release of viral RNA from infected cells. Fmoc-L-alpha-aminobutyric acid has been shown to have anti-viral activity against the influenza virus and HIV.
