Formazin is a reactive fatty acid that has been used as a model for the study of steric interactions in organic compounds. It has been shown to be an effective analog of ethyl diazoacetate, and it is used in the synthesis of nitrogen heterocycles. Formazin has been shown to react with hydrochloric acid to form formic acid or with trifluoroacetic acid to form trifluoroethanol. Formazin can also be used as a fluorescence probe for the detection of acidic conditions, such as those found in influenza virus.
