Description

F-M-R-F is a peptide that has been shown to have an analgesic effect. It is synthesized from the amino acid methionine and has three phenylalanine residues and two arginine residues. F-M-R-F is derived from the nerve cell membrane protein synaptosomal associated protein of 25,000 daltons (SNAP25). F-M-R-F has been found to inhibit the release of neurotransmitters such as acetylcholine, noradrenaline, and 5HT. This compound also inhibits protease activity in the brain and thus may be a potential therapeutic agent for Parkinson's disease or other neurodegenerative diseases. FMRF exerts its pharmacological effects by binding to receptors on nerve cells. In particular, it binds to M1 receptors which are located on neurons in the central nervous system and on gland cells in peripheral tissues.
