3-Fluoro-Pyrrolidine is a fluorine compound that has been shown to inhibit the growth of Giardia lamblia. It binds to glutamate dehydrogenase, blocking its activity and preventing the conversion of glutamate into acetylcholine. This activity inhibits nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (nAChR) signaling and prevents muscle contractions by blocking the release of acetylcholine. 3-Fluoro-Pyrrolidine also inhibits cholinesterases, which are enzymes that break down acetylcholine. This inhibition leads to an accumulation of acetylcholine in the central nervous system, causing symptoms such as headache, nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea. 3-Fluoro-Pyrrolidine is used in the diagnosis of giardiasis by inhibiting the growth of Giardia lamblia in cell cultures.
