Fluorosalicylaldehyde is an aromatic hydrocarbon that is structurally similar to phenol, but contains a fluorine atom in place of the hydroxyl group. Fluorosalicylaldehyde has been shown to inhibit the growth of cancer cells and is a potential therapeutic for cancer treatment. It also has anti-inflammatory properties and can be used as an inhibitor for compounds that are involved in the propagation of infectious diseases. Fluorosalicylaldehyde binds with metal ions such as copper, iron, or manganese by chelating them and inhibiting their catalytic activity. This inhibition can lead to inhibition of enzymes that are important for cellular metabolism, including catalase and hydroxyl groups.
Fluorosalicylaldehyde has been shown to have beneficial effects on patients with primary sclerosing cholangitis who suffer from hepatic impairment, such as liver failure or cirrhosis. This chemical has been shown to reduce cachexia (muscle wasting)
