Description

1-Fluorobenzo[a]pyrene is a chemical compound that is classified as a dione. It is a metabolite of benzopyrene and other polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). 1-Fluorobenzo[a]pyrene binds to the peroxidase enzyme, which can be found in many tissues of the body. The peroxidase enzyme catalyzes the oxidation of 1-fluorobenzo[a]pyrene to reactive quinones, which produce oxidative DNA damage. This process also produces reactive oxygen species, such as hydroxyl radicals, which cause further damage to DNA. These processes have been implicated in carcinogenesis and other mechanisms that lead to cancer. 1-Fluorobenzo[a]pyrene has been used as a probe for studying peroxidase activity and prostaglandins.
