Fluorocurarine chloride is a drug that blocks the neuromuscular junction. It is used in patients who are at risk of developing muscle weakness, such as those with myasthenia gravis or following surgery. Fluorocurarine chloride binds to the acetylcholine receptor and prevents the neurotransmitter from binding to the receptor. This blocks transmission of impulses from nerve cells to muscles and leads to paralysis. Fluorocurarine chloride is also an acidic drug that may cause mutations in nucleic acid sequences. The crystal structure of fluorocurarine chloride has been determined using x-ray diffraction analyses and borohydride reduction methods.
