The chemical reacts with water or wastewater to form a hydroperoxide, which is an effective disinfectant. 4-Fluoro-2,3-dimethylphenol has been shown to inhibit influenza virus neuraminidase activity by preventing the release of viral particles from infected cells. This inhibitor also blocks the attachment of the virus to human cells by blocking influenza hemagglutinin receptors on respiratory epithelial cells.
