5-Fluoropentyl isothiocyanate (5FITC) is a reactive chemical that has been shown to be toxic to mammalian kidney cells. It also inhibits the synthesis of DNA and RNA, which leads to cell death. 5FITC binds to sulfhydryl groups in proteins and may interfere with their function. In addition, 5FITC is a strong inhibitor of thiocyanate synthesis by competing with the enzyme rhodanase for the substrate thiosulfate. This chemical has been injected into animals at high doses, resulting in death.br>br>5FITC reacts with halides in an acid environment to form fluorinated products. It also reacts with nitro compounds to form nitroso derivatives.
