3'-Fluoro-2',3'-Dideoxy-5-Iodouridine (3'-FDU) is a nucleoside analog that inhibits the replication of HIV in vitro. 3'-FDU is an analog of uracil and binds to viral RNA, which prevents viral DNA synthesis by blocking the incorporation of nucleotides into the growing strand. The antiviral activity was found to be dose dependent. 3'-FDU showed inhibitory effects on the replication of murine sarcoma virus and guinea pig hepatoma virus in vitro. The effective dose for treatment of HIV infection was found to be 500 micrograms per kilogram body weight. 3'-FDU has also been shown to inhibit RNA synthesis and protein synthesis in human cells infected with murine leukemia virus or human T-cell leukemia virus type 1.
