Description

Fluorometholone is a medication that is used to treat hyperthyroidism and thyrotoxicosis. It can also be used as post-operative treatment in thyroidectomy patients. Fluorometholone is a synthetic corticosteroid with anti-inflammatory and antipruritic properties. It inhibits the release of inflammatory mediators from mast cells, which are cells that are located in connective tissue, blood vessels, and other tissues in the body. Inhibition of these mediators reduces inflammation and itching. Fluorometholone has been shown to inhibit hiv-1 replication by interfering with the domain binding of HIV-1 to the human thyrocyte receptor (TcR) on the surface of thyroid cells. This drug also has an inhibitory effect on thyroid uptake in vitro and may have a protective effect against radiation-induced hypothyroidism due to increased thyroxine levels.
