4-Fluoro-N-methylaniline is an aldehyde oxidase substrate that contains nitrogen atoms. It is metabolized in vivo to form the corresponding amide, which has been shown to be labile and may be converted to other metabolites. These metabolites have been shown to undergo oxidation by cytochrome P450 enzymes and cytochromes, with the production of reactive intermediates. The reaction mechanism for the formation of 4-fluoro-N-methylaniline from 4-fluorobenzoic acid was reconstituted in vitro and found to proceed through an initial step involving the abstraction of a proton from the electrophilic carbon atom by molecular oxygen. This leads to the formation of a carbonyl intermediate, which is then attacked by water or alcohols to produce 4-fluoro-N-methylaniline. The metabolic products of this reaction include 4-(hydroxymethyl)benzaldehyde (
