Glyceryl monostearate is a white powder that is composed of glycerin and stearic acid. It has been shown to have high chemical stability in the presence of benzalkonium chloride, which is an antiseptic. Glyceryl monostearate can be used as a particle stabilizer in the preparation of some medications, such as sodium citrate and water vapor. Glyceryl monostearate may also have potential for use in the treatment of metabolic disorders like diabetes mellitus. The mechanism by which glyceryl monostearate may work to treat diabetes mellitus is not well understood. Glyceryl monostearate has also been shown to inhibit leukemia inhibitory factor and phase transition temperature, but its function in these areas is unknown.
