Description

Gly-Gly-OEt·HCl is a reactive model system that has been used to study the synthesis of glycerol esters and amides. The reactivity of the molecule is controlled by the presence of a hydroxyl group, which can be either protonated or deprotonated. In this molecule, the hydroxylic group is deprotonated, which renders it less reactive than if it were protonated. The reactivity of Gly-Gly-OEt·HCl is also influenced by the chloride ion because it stabilizes the negative charge on the oxygen atom.
The molecule contains a carboxylic acid group and an amine group, which form an amide bond when reacted with one another. This reaction requires a piperidinecarboxylic acid as well as an ester hydrochloride in order to complete the reaction.
