Gold's Reagent is a chemical reagent that is used for the detection of ketones. It is prepared by dissolving gold chloride in methylene chloride and adding dimethylammonium chloride. Gold's Reagent solidifies into a yellow mass and can be filtered to remove impurities. This reagent can be used to detect ketones in a sample by adding it to the mixture and noting whether or not the solution becomes cloudy. The reaction with ketones forms iminium ions, which are soluble in organic solvents such as methylene chloride, but not water. This reaction yields an insoluble precipitate that can be removed by filtration. Gold's Reagent is also used in synthetic chemistry for the preparation of esters from alcohols and acyl chlorides.
