trans,trans-4-(4-Methylphenyl)-4'-vinylbicyclohexane (cetrimonium chloride) is a cationic surfactant that is produced by the reaction of 4-methylbenzene and vinyl bromide. It is used as an antimicrobial agent in industry, agriculture, and medicine to enhance the effectiveness of other agents and to help remove cellular debris during cell culture. Cetrimonium chloride has been shown to be effective against Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus, Candida albicans, Trichophyton mentagrophytes, and Aspergillus niger. The mechanism of action of cetrimonium chloride is adsorption at the cell surface. This occurs through electrostatic interactions between the positively charged cetrimonium ions and negatively charged fatty acids on the surface of cells. Long-
