The compound is active against viral infections of herpes simplex virus (HSV-1 and HSV-2), murine cytomegalovirus (CMV) and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV-1). Hypericin is inhibitor of monoaminoxidase enzyme (MAO), protein kinase C (PKC), dopamine-beta-hydroxylase, reverse transcriptase, telomerase and cytochrome P450 (CYP).
