Hexamethylene diisocyanate (HDI) is a colorless liquid with a high boiling point. It belongs to the class of polyurethane precursors and is used as an intermediate in the production of polyurethane foams. HDI is readily soluble in water, but is not miscible with glycol ethers. HDI has been shown to have low acute toxicity in animal studies, but can cause irritation of the skin and eyes at higher concentrations. HDI has been shown to form esters with various alcohols and amines, which are chiral compounds that can be analyzed by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy.
