Description

6-Hydroxyindole is a synthetic compound with the chemical formula of C7H8N2O. It has been shown that this drug is a potent 5-HT1A receptor agonist and has been shown to have an effect on human keratinocytes. 6-Hydoxyindole is structurally similar to the carcinoid syndrome inducing agent, indoleamine 2,3-dioxygenase (IDO), which is a metabolic product of tryptophan metabolism. It has been found that 6-hydroxyindole inhibits uptake of tryptophan by human keratinocytes, which may explain its effects on tumor proliferation.
6-Hydroxyindole has also been shown to inhibit the growth of Pseudomonas aeruginosa in vitro and in vivo. This drug binds to ribosomes and may affect protein synthesis in bacteria by inhibiting protein synthesis at the initiation stage.
