2-Hydroxy-6-methylpyridine-3-carboxylic acid (2HMP) is a carbon source that is produced by the liver from choline. 2HMP has been shown to be effective in vitro against cancer, with an optimal reaction being at 0.1 mM. 2HMP has also been shown to inhibit the growth of bacteria when present in concentrations of 1 mM or greater. 2HMP can be used as a chemical intermediate for the synthesis of heterobicyclic compounds and chlorogenic acids, which are potent antioxidants. It can also be used in cryo-electron microscopy studies as a carbon source for electron microscopy samples.
