Description :2-Hydroxy-3-methylbutyric acid is an intermediate in the microbial metabolism of hydrogen fluoride and caproic acid. It can be used as a diagnostic for probiotic bacteria. 2-Hydroxy-3-methylbutyric acid has been shown to cause cell lysis, which may be due to its ability to act as a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) enhancer. The activity index of 2-hydroxy-3-methylbutyric acid is higher than that of other organic acids, such as 3,4-dimethoxybenzoic acid and ferulic acid.
