4-Hydroxyquinoline-2-carboxylic acid (4HQCA) is a drug that is an antagonist at the α7 nicotinic acetylcholine receptor. It has been shown to have significant effects on glutamate, kynurenate, and kynurenic acid levels in the brain. 4HQCA binds to the α7 nicotinic acetylcholine receptor with high affinity and specificity. This binding prevents agonists from activating the receptor, which can lead to neuronal death. 4HQCA also inhibits tryptophan hydroxylase activity, which may be responsible for its anti-depressive effects.
