Hydroxyguanidine sulfate is an enzyme preparation that has been shown to be effective in the treatment of cancer. It can inhibit tumor vasculature and angiogenesis, which are important factors in the development and progression of cancer. The human liver contains a number of enzymes, including pyrazinoic acid hydroxylase, which converts pyrazinoic acid to hydroxyguanidine sulfate. This conversion takes place in normal cells but not in cancer cells. Hydroxyguanidine sulfate binds to cholinergic receptors on the cell membrane and inhibits cgmp-dependent protein kinase, which is involved in the signal transduction pathway for c1-c4 haloalkyls. This inhibition leads to decreases in intracellular cAMP concentrations, which then leads to decreased rates of cellular proliferation.
