1-(5-Hydroxy-2-nitrophenyl)ethanone (1HNPE) is a cytotoxic agent that has been found to be effective against cancer cell lines in vitro. It is a synthetic compound with inhibitory properties against cancer cells and other tumor cell lines. 1HNPE has been shown to work through mechanisms of action, including the inhibition of topoisomerase II and DNA synthesis. 1HNPE also inhibits protein synthesis by binding to ribosomes, preventing the production of proteins vital for cell division. 1HNPE is stable in water but hydrolyzes in acid or base to produce 5-hydroxy-2-nitrobenzaldehyde, which is responsible for its cytotoxicity.
