Description

2-(2-Hydroxyphenyl)-1,3-thiazolidine-4-carboxylic acid is a hypotensive agent that belongs to the group of thiazolidine carboxylic acids. It is used as a diuretic and antihypertensive drug, and is also used industrially in the production of 2,5-furandione, an intermediate in the manufacture of polyester fibers. The drug binds to thiol groups on proteins and acts as a competitive antagonist to angiotensin II. This prevents the binding of angiotensin II to its receptors on vascular smooth muscle cells, which results in relaxation of blood vessels and decreased blood pressure. 2-(2-Hydroxyphenyl)-1,3-thiazolidine-4-carboxylic acid is inexpensively available for oral administration and has been shown to be effective for lowering blood pressure in hypertensive patients.
