• Description: 3-Hydroxyphthalic anhydride is a chemical compound that contains a hydroxy group. This can be used as a monomer to synthesize polyesters with high molecular weights. 3-Hydroxyphthalic anhydride is also used as an intermediate in organic synthesis and has been shown to inhibit the replication of herpes simplex virus, although it does not work on other viruses. It reacts with protein molecules on the surface of cells, causing the cells to die by inhibiting protein synthesis and cell division. 3-Hydroxyphthalic anhydride has carcinogenic potential and has been shown to cause cancer in animals.
