The reaction with p-nitrophenyl gives a hydroxyphenyl compound with the ether group replaced by hexyl. 4-N-Hexyloxynitrobenzene can be used as a solvent for nitrocellulose or other cellulose esters, and as an additive to plasticizers such as dioctyl phthalate.
