2-(Hydroxymethyl)benzo[b]thiophene (HBPT) is a compound that is structurally related to the natural product 2-acetyl-benzo[b]thiophene, which has been shown to be an effective proliferator. HBPT has been shown to cause an increase in lipid levels and an increased rate of weight gain in mouse models. It also increases the production of inflammatory cytokines and nitric oxide, which may contribute to its pro-inflammatory effects. HBPT can be used as a biomimetic for the treatment of chronic inflammation. The hydroxymethyl group on the molecule allows it to act as a bidentate ligand, binding with two different parts of the target molecule at once. This property makes HBPT useful in industrial processes where it can bind with metal ions and prevent corrosion or oxidation reactions.
