Description

1-(4-Hydroxyphenyl)-5-mercaptotetrazole, also known as HMT, is a supramolecular compound that has been shown to have potent cytotoxic effects against cancer cells. It has been shown to bind to DNA and RNA in a way that inhibits their function. The supramolecular structure of HMT is made up of hydrogen bonding and intermolecular interactions between nitrogen atoms. 1-(4-Hydroxyphenyl)-5-mercaptotetrazole has been synthesized using electrochemical methods, as well as by simulations. The molecular formula for this molecule is C6H3N3O2S and the molecular weight is 176.14 g/mol. 1-(4-Hydroxyphenyl)-5-mercaptotetrazole was first isolated in 1891 by French chemist Charles Cahours, who named it pyrogallol red (1,2,3).
